Abstract
As the educational paradigm of the 21st century, digital pedagogy is radically transforming all levels of education, including higher education. This transformation has brought virtual learning ecologies into the spotlight, particularly in debates that contrast real-time, physical education with virtual modalities. These debates often reduce digital transformation to a purely technological phenomenon, neglecting its theoretical—ontological and epistemological—underpinnings. Such a reductionist approach poses a long-term risk of turning education into a robotic culture, thereby threatening the sustainability of digital transformation in higher education. Hence, achieving a balanced and sustainable digital higher education system requires a philosophical and pedagogical perspective. This study, conducted using the document analysis method, aims to analyze the virtual-digital higher education ecology through the lens of educational philosophy and pedagogy, constructing a conceptual framework in the process. Documents serving as the study’s data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis, leading to the following conclusions: The theory of virtual-digital education in higher education can be framed within a new form of human–machine interaction, described as “disembodied human—spaceless technology.” The main stakeholders of this ecology—free from time, space, and physical dimension—may include the avatar-student, digital curriculum, and moderator-instructor. Existing pedagogical principles are inadequate in addressing the ontological and epistemological uncertainties emerging from the contactless interactions among these entities. Therefore, analyzing this digital ecology—exemplified through the metaverse—within a philosophical and pedagogical context is essential for guiding future developments.
Özet
