Abstract

Objective: This study was planned to determine and compare the patient privacy behaviors and multidimensional emotional empathy levels of nursing and medical students. Methods: The sample of the research, which is planned as descriptive and relationship-seeking, consists of 340 nursing students and 205 medical students from a university in the Black Sea Region. The data were collected face-to-face with the Individual Diagnosis Form, Patient Privacy Scale and Multidimensional Emotional Empathy Scale between November 2021 and March 2022. Ethics committee approval, institutional permission, and informed consent were obtained from the students before starting the study. Results: It was determined that the patient privacy scale average score of the nursing department students was 43.25±15.21, the medical department students 48.41±19.09, the multidimensional Emotional Empathy Scale score average was 111.61±15.42 for the nursing department students, and 107.91±14.71 for the medical department students. A statistically significant difference was found between the groups according to the mean score of the Patient Privacy Scale of the students and their gender, department, class, reading the patient rights regulation, and receiving treatment or care in the hospital before (p<0.05). It was determined that there was a statistically significant difference between the students' Multidimensional Emotional Empathy Scale mean score and gender, department, class, and previous hospital treatment or care status (p<0.05). In addition, it was determined that there was a statistically weak, negative and statistically significant relationship between the patient privacy scale mean scores of nursing and medical students and the mean scores of the Multidimensional Emotional Empathy Scale (r=-0.346; p=0.000). Conclusion: In this study, it was determined that both nursing and medical students had low patient privacy behaviors and high empathy levels. In this direction, it is recommended to plan trainings and provide feedback in order to raise awareness of students especially on patient privacy.
