Abstract

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE PERCEPTIONS OF DRUG ADMINISTRATION ERRORS AND THE LEVELS OF BURNOUT OF THE NURSES WORKING IN THE NEWBORN INTENSIVE CARE UNIT ABSTRACT Objective: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between the perceptions of nurses working in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) regarding medication errors and their burnout levels. Materials and Methods: This study is an analytical-cross-sectional study. Data were collected between 25. 02. 2022 and 25. 06. 2022 by reaching out to nurses working in the neonatal intensive care unit via social media platforms. Two scales, the Medication Administration Error Scale and the Burnout Scale-Short Form, were applied as an online survey. A total of 289 neonatal intensive care nurses participated in the study. Frequency and percentage analysis, mean and standard deviation, t-test, Anova and post hoc Tukey test were used in the analysis of the data. Findings: The mean of the “Part A” of the Medication Error Scale was determined as 88.142±21.934, the mean of the “Part B” as 54.401±15.040, and the mean of the “Part C” as 42.135±34.936. The mean “burnout” of the nurses was found to be very high as 4.553±1.662. As a result of the regression analysis, the general change in the level of Part A is explained by burnout at a rate of 8.1%. 5.2% of the total change in Part B is explained by burnout (R²=0.052). The regression analysis conducted to determine the cause-effect relationship between burnout and Part C was not found to be significant (F=0.076; p>0.050). Conclusion: In Part A, where the perceptions of the nurses regarding the causes of medication errors were measured; It was determined that the ‘Proneness to Error’, ‘Industry’ sub-factors had the most effect and the ‘Pharmacy’ sub-factor had the least effect. In section B; it was determined that the ‘Administrative response’ sub-factor had the most effect, followed by the ‘Fear’ and ‘Disagreement on Error’ sub-factors. In section C, it was determined that nurses thought that medication errors were not reported correctly. It was determined that the burnout levels of NICU nurses were very high. It was found that the burnout level varied according to age, nursing duration, nursing model used, nurse’s position and working style. It was determined that burnout increased medication errors. Keywords: Nurse; medication errors; burnout; newborn

Bulgular: İlaç Uygulama Hatası Ölçeğinin “A bölümü” ortalaması 88,142±21,934, “B bölümü” ortalaması 54,401±15,040, “C bölümü” ortalaması 42,135±34,936 olarak saptanmıştır. Hemşirelerin “tükenmişlik” ortalaması 4,553±1,662 çok yüksek bulunmuştur. Regresyon analizi sonucunda A bölümünün düzeyindeki genel değişim, %8,1'lik oranında tükenmişlik ile açıklanmaktadır. Destekleyen kurumlar: -
