Abstract

Aim: The study aims to examine the relationship between the nutritional behaviors, anthropometric measurements and individual characteristics of heart failure patients and the quality of life. Methods: The study has a descriptive cross-sectional design and was conducted with 54 patients who applied to or were hospitalized in the cardiology clinic of a hospital in Turkey between April and August 2023. The data obtained from the study were evaluated by frequency, percentage and descriptive statistical methods. In addition, “Mann-Whitney U” test, “Kruskal-Wallis H” test and Bonferroni correction were applied during the analyzes. Results: It was determined that there was no significant relationship between the anthropometric measurements of the patients and their quality of life (p>0,05). It was determined that patients with nutritional behaviors aimed at preventing retention had significantly higher physical (r=0.368, p<0.05), emotional (r=0.394, p<0.05), and heart quality of life scores (r=0.453, p<0.001). Conclusion: In this context, nurses should use their roles as consultants and educators to help patients gain nutritional behaviors aimed at preventing retention. On the other hand, determining the nutritional problems of patients with heart failure, it is recommended to use nutritional scales developed specifically for the patients, as well as to follow their anthropometric values at frequent intervals.
