Abstract

Quality of Life After Bariatric Surgery: A Two-Center Study Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the quality of life in patients who underwent bariatric surgery 12 to 24 months prior and to identify the factors affecting it. Method: A descriptive, cross-sectional design was used. The study included 118 patients aged 18 years and older who had undergone sleeve gastrectomy at two university hospitals in Türkiye. Data were collected using the Sociodemographic and Clinical Characteristics Form and the Quality of Life Scale After Obesity Surgery. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, independent samples t-test, and Mann–Whitney U test were utilized for data analysis. Results: The mean age of the participants was 35.76±10.81 years; 63.6% were female. The mean postoperative BMI was 26.86±4.24. The average score in the biopsychosocial dimension of the quality of life scale was 71.53±6.95, while the complications dimension score was 23.94±4.26. Significant associations were found between quality of life scores and variables such as age, BMI, sex, marital status, parental status, smoking, comorbidities, and nonsurgical treatment methods. Conclusion: Bariatric surgery contributed positively to patients' physical function, psychosocial well-being, and sexual life. However, moderate levels of postoperative complications highlight the importance of structured follow-up and complication management in clinical care.

Özet

Bariatrik Cerrahi Sonrası Yaşam Kalitesinin İncelenmesi: İki Merkezli Bir Çalışma Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, bariyatrik cerrahiden sonraki 12 ila 24 ay arasında olan hastaların yaşam kalitesini değerlendirmek ve bunu etkileyen faktörleri belirlemektir. Yöntem: Tanımlayıcı-kesitsel desen kullanılmıştır. Çalışma, Türkiye’deki iki üniversite hastanesinde sleeve gastrektomi geçirmiş, 18 yaş ve üzeri 118 hastayı kapsamaktadır. Veriler, Sosyodemografik ve Klinik Özellikler Formu ile Obezite Cerrahisi Sonrası Yaşam Kalitesi Ölçeği kullanılarak toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde tanımlayıcı istatistikler, Pearson korelasyon, bağımsız örneklem t-testi ve Mann–Whitney U testi kullanılmıştır. Bulgular: Katılımcıların yaş ortalaması 35,76±10,81 olup %63,6’sı kadındır. Ameliyat sonrası vücut kitle indeksi ortalaması 26,86±4,24’tür. Yaşam kalitesi ölçeğinin biyopsikososyal boyut ortalaması 71,53±6,95, komplikasyonlar boyutu ortalaması ise 23,94±4,26’dır. Yaşam kalitesi puanları ile yaş, VKİ, cinsiyet, medeni durum, çocuk sahibi olma durumu, sigara kullanımı, komorbidite varlığı ve cerrahi dışı tedavi yöntemleri gibi değişkenler arasında anlamlı ilişkiler bulunmuştur. Sonuç: Bariyatrik cerrahinin fiziksel fonksiyon, psikososyal iyilik hali ve cinsel yaşam üzerinde olumlu katkıları olduğu görülmüştür. Ancak, orta düzeyde gözlemlenen postoperatif komplikasyonlar, yapılandırılmış takip süreçleri ve komplikasyon yönetiminin klinik bakımda önemini vurgulamaktadır.
