Abstract

The commentary–supercommentary tradition had long been characterized through a pejorative perspective, often described as a product of the so-called period of decline and as a corpus that introduced no genuinely new contribution to Islamic thought. However, in recent decades, a number of studies rejecting this perception have begun to appear. The work analyzed in this study aligns with the view that commentaries possess functions far more diverse and significant than is commonly assumed. In this research, several commentaries authored by a particular scholar are examined in order to demonstrate the distinct merits of the memzūj (integrated) method among the various forms of commentary writing. Furthermore, the study illustrates—through concrete examples—how a commentary’s close connection to earlier canonical works may, over time, enable it to attain canonical status for subsequent generations. According to the author’s findings, the processes of canon formation and scholarly contribution within this tradition did not occur through the radical and revolutionary transformations envisioned by some modernist thinkers, but rather through an organic and gradual development consistent with the inner spirit of the Islamic sciences.
