Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the impact of lime (CaCO3) application on shoot dry weight, chlorophyll concentration, active and total iron contents, and iron uptake in seven sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) lines (SL12, SL18, SL21, SL25, SL28, SL34, and SL37) under iron-deficient conditions. Plants were grown for 50 days in a controlled greenhouse environment using a quartz sand culture system and irrigated daily with an Fe-free nutrient solution. Lime was applied at two doses: 0 g (K0) and 25 g (K25) per pot. Results revealed significant genotypic variation in response to lime treatment. SL37 and SL25 showed the highest shoot biomass regardless of lime application, while SL18 exhibited superior Fe uptake under control conditions. Total chlorophyll and chlorophyll a contents were negatively affected by lime in most lines, particularly in SL12, SL21, SL34, and SL37. Active Fe content showed a significant decrease only in SL21, while a significant increase was observed in SL37 under lime treatment. Similarly, total Fe content decreased under lime in SL21, SL25, SL28, and SL34, while no significant changes were observed in SL12, SL18, and SL37. Root ferric chelate reductase activity showed an increasing trend under lime treatment, although differences were not statistically significant. These findings indicate that genotypic differences in Fe acquisition and utilization play a key role under calcareous conditions and highlight SL37 and SL25 as promising genotypes for cultivation in calcareous soils with limited Fe availability.
