Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between parents' health literacy level and their knowledge of first aid practices for their children. Material and Methods: The study was conducted between January and June 2023 among parents of 275 children aged 0-6 years who presented to the pediatric emergency department of a provincial children's hospital in the Western Black Sea region of Turkey with a complaint of a situation requiring first aid at home. Data were collected using the Descriptive Information Form, the Health Literacy Scale, and the Basic First Aid Knowledge Level Assessment Form. Statistical analyses of the study were performed using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) 22.0. Results: The mean age of the children participating in the study was 3.92±1.38 years (0-7 years) and 72.0% (n=198) were male. The most common reasons for ED visits were swelling (arm, leg, etc.), epistaxis, poisoning, bleeding in any part of the body, burns, head trauma, fainting, and drowning. 62.2% of parents had never received first aid training. As the level of health literacy of the parents increased, the level of basic first aid knowledge also increased (r=0.658, p=0.000). Conclusion: There was a correlation between health literacy and parents' knowledge of basic first aid for their children. By increasing their health literacy level, parents will be able to have more accurate first aid knowledge and skills for their children in accidents that occur at home. In future studies, it is recommended to plan education-based studies on parental first aid practices for common childhood accidents

Özet

Amaç: Bu araştırmanın amacı ebeveynlerin sağlık okuryazarlık düzeyi ile çocuklarına yönelik ilk yardım uygulamalarına dair bilgi düzeyi arasındaki ilişkinin incelenmesidir. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Araştırma Ocak-Haziran 2023 tarihleri içerisinde Türkiye’nin Batı Karadeniz Bölgesi’nde bir taşra çocuk hastanesinin çocuk acil servisine evde meydana gelen herhangi bir ilkyardım gerektiren duruma yönelik şikâyet ile gelen 0-6 yaş arası 275 çocuğun ebeveynleri ile gerçekleştirildi. Veriler “Tanıtıcı Bilgi Formu”, “Sağlık Okuryazarlığı Ölçeği” ve “Temel İlkyardım Bilgi Düzeyi Değerlendirme Formu” ile toplandı. Araştırmanın istatistiksel analizleri SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) 22.0 paket programı ile gerçekleştirildi. Bulgular: Araştırmaya katılan çocukların yaş ortalaması 3.92±1.38 (0-7 yaş) ve %72.0’ı (n=198) erkekti. Çocukların acile başvurma nedenleri; vücudunun herhangi bir çarpma sonrası şişme (kol, bacak, gibi), burun kanaması, zehirlenme, vücudun herhangi bir bölgesinde kanama, yanık, kafa travması, bayılma, boğulmaydı. Ebeveynlerin %62.2’si daha önce ilkyardım eğitimi almamıştı. Ebeveynlerin sağlık okuryazarlık düzeyi arttıkça temel ilkyardım uygulama bilgi düzeyi de artmaktaydı (r=0.658, p=0.000). Sonuç: Sağlık okuryazarlığı ebeveynlerin çocuklarına uyguladıkları temel ilkyardıma yönelik bilgi düzeyi arasında ilişki vardı. Ebeveynler sağlık okuryazarlık düzeylerinin yükseltilmesiyle evde meydana gelen kazalarda çocuklarına daha doğru ilkyardım bilgi ve becerisine sahip olabilecektir. Gelecek araştırmalarda ebeveynlere çocuklarda sık görülen kazalara yönelik ilkyardım uygulamalarına yönelik eğitim temelli araştırmaların planlanması önerilmektedir.
