Abstract

This study is conducted to breed new apricot varieties suitable for different purposes. Late maturing fresh consumption apricot breeding studies were started in 2001, while dry apricot breeding studies were started in 2003, and early maturing and mid-season fresh consumption apricot breeding studies were started in 2004. In 2007, crossings were performed between PPV resistant foreigner apricot varieties and local varieties for breeding of Sharka resistant apricots. With the breeding program which includes various local and foreigner apricot varieties as parental lines, artificial pollinations have been made on approximately 280.000 flowers of 250 combinations. Within the scope of the project, around 22.000 hybrid apricot rootstocks have been obtained and pomological evaluations of 19.000 plants have been accomplished. Yield and pomological analysis of 3.000 plants which have been obtained by back crossing studies of promising hybrids to improve their lacking characters is being continued. As a result of the project studies the early maturing variety, “Dilbay”, was bred and registered and registration process of a late maturing variety, “Eylül” is being continued.
