Abstract

Background and Aims Historic agricultural terraces are heritage landscapes shaped by nature-human interaction and form a key component of rural cultural landscapes. This study reconstructs the landscape biography of Selge, an ancient settlement with agricultural terraces in Manavgat, Antalya, to identify its heritage values and inform conservation-oriented planning. Methods The study had two stages; the first evaluated natural processes, cultural processes, agricultural history, and agriculture-environment interactions through literature and field analyses, while the second interpreted findings against World Heritage criteria and translated them into a conservation-oriented planning framework. Results The Selge landscape developed through multilayered processes since the 13th century BC; recurring patterns included agricultural continuity, adaptive capacity, the role of water management, links between prosperity and spatial development (the concurrent increase in public building activity and settlement density during periods of economic prosperity), and resilience to repeated abandonment. Conclusions Selge’s heritage value derives not only from ruins but from the landscape character shaped by natural and cultural processes; landscape biography offers a framework for integrating living production systems and local knowledge into conservation decisions.
