Abstract

Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) face various problems in accessing investment financing. This problem, known as the financial gap, affects the decisions made by SMEs during resource allocation. In order to measure the effects and consequences of this capital gap, a survey was conducted with 112 privately held manufacturing SMEs operating in the Eskişehir Organized Industrial Zone. The findings showed that the majority of the companies use internal resources for financing, while in the case of micro-sized companies, the majority of them choose external financing first. When it comes to debt targets and resource allocation preferences, it was concluded that micro-sized companies behave proportionally closer to the trade-off theory compared to companies of other sizes, while medium-sized companies tend to act closer to the hierarchy theory in percentage terms. SMEs also consider the fact that high levels of debt make it difficult to act independently as an important problem.
