Abstract

In this study, the return and volatility spillovers from the gold market implied volatility index (GVZ) to the gold market and from the crude oil market implied volatility index (OVX) to the Brent crude oil market are examined with the Multivariate VAR-EGARCH method for pre and post Covid-19 periods characterized by different market conditions. As a result of the analysis, no return interaction from the GVZ index to the gold market was found for both periods. On the other hand, volatility transmission from lagged shocks of the GVZ index to the gold market was found in both periods. Therefore, we find that the returns and volatility spillovers from the GVZ index to the gold market did not change with the Covid-19 crisis. On the other hand, although there was a return spillover from the OVX index to the Brent crude oil market before Covid-19, this transmission mechanism weakened after Covid-19. Moreover, unlike to the pre-Covid-19 period, a volatility spillover from the lagged shocks of the OVX index to the Brent crude oil market was found after the pandemic. This finding suggests that the return and volatility interaction from the OVX index to the Brent crude oil market has diverged with the Covid-19 crisis.
