Abstract
The subject of this study consists of two terracotta vessels in the form of feeding bottles from the Yolağzı Neighborhood in the Karacabey District of Bursa Province. The local resident who handed over the bottles to the Bursa Archaeological Museum stated that they were found while digging the soil. A part of the ancient city necropolis, believed to belong to Miletopolis, lies within the boundaries of this neighborhood. Therefore, it is thought that the feeding bottles were grave offerings. Although terracotta feeding bottles appear to be linked with infants and young children, during the Classical and Hellenistic periods they are attested almost exclusively in necropolis contexts. Moreover, feeding bottles constitute a rarely attested vessel type in antiquity. The Miletopolis examples derive from the Attic type characterized by a side spout and vertical handle; however, they feature proportionally wider mouth openings and slightly more globular bodies. Their surfaces bear a matte red slip applied by dipping technique. Based on their form and slip, these vessels can be dated between the late 2nd century BC and the early 1st century AD. They are significant as evidence of the continued influence of the Attic form repertoire in the region during this period. The article presents information on the typology of Attic-type feeding bottles in antiquity and their archaeological contexts. Finally, the significance of the Miletopolis feeding bottles to regional archaeology is evaluated within the framework of current knowledge.
