Abstract

In this study, the effects of silicon (200 ppm) and biochar (2%) applications on the phenolic substance, flavonoid, anthocyanin content and antioxidant activity of pansies (Viola wittrockiana) were investigated. According to the obtained data, the effects of biochar and silicon applications on the phenolic substance and flavonoid content remained at similar levels with the control. While biochar and silicon applications applied alone caused a decrease in anthocyanin content compared to the control, the combined application of silicon and biochar showed similar effects with the control. Although the effects of the applications on antioxidant activity were similar to the control, silicon and silicon + biochar applications were found to be more effective than biochar application alone. This study showed that silicon and biochar combinations may be a potential strategy to improve the functional properties of edible flowers.
