Abstract

Objective: Robbery is a crime that has an increasing incidence among children and adolescents in Turkiye. In this study we investigated the distribution of psychiatric diagnoses, sociodemographic and neuropsychological features of male adolescents who dragged into robbery. Methods: Thirty adolescents 12-18 yearold, male who were referred to Ondokuz Mayis University Medical Faculty Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for psychiatric assessment because of a robbery were included. Another 30 male adolescents matched in terms of age and level of intelligence and who did not dragged into any crime were included as a control sample. Sociodemographic variables are collected and to assess impulsivity Barratt Impulsivity Scale-11 BIS-11 were given. In addition, to assess the neurophysiological profile, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test WCST and Stroop Test were applied. Results: Of subjects, 63% in the group where the adolescents were dragged into robbery were found to have at least one psychiatric diagnoses. Mostly the diagnoses were Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD 56% and Major Depressive Disorder MDD 26% . Results of the WCST and Stroop Tests reveal that compared to control cases, the adolescents who were dragged into robbery had worse performance in terms of executive functions. In addition, these adolescents had more behavioral problems and higher scores in impulsivity scale. Conclusion: The results indicate that most of the adolescents who were dragged into robbery have at least one psychiatric disorder and they have problems in impulse control and executive function era. Psychiatric disorders significantly influence the formation of the robbery crime, punishment process and recurrence of the crime. Therefore, early recognition of the psychiatric disorder and effective treatment have an extremely important effect on decreasing the incidence of crime and reintegration of the adolescent into the community.
