Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental condition presenting after experiencing a traumatic event. In the practice of forensic medicine, psychological evaluation retains its importance as an indispensable element complementing physical evaluation in crimes against sexual privacy. Therefore, in this study, the aim was to discuss the importance of psychological evaluation through sociodemographic data of cases diagnosed with PTSD, which is common in crimes against sexual privacy. METHODS: The research design was a descriptive study. Included in the study were cases referred to the 6th Specialization Board in a three-year period with a diagnosis of PTSD and whose mental health was deteriorating. Data obtained by scanning the files were transferred to an information sheet prepared by the researcher and evaluated by SPSS 13.0 software for Windows. RESULTS: In the 6th Specialization Board of the Council of Forensic Medicine over a three-year period, 840 cases were diagnosed with PTSD following a sexual assault whose mental health was concluded to be deteriorating. Of these, 577 were women and 660 were under the age of 18. It was determined that the attacker was first-degree close in 126 cases, second-degree close in 547, and a stranger in 132 cases. It was also determined that the number of defendants occurred once in 715 of the cases and once in 434, while in 551 cases the incident was reported by the victim. CONCLUSION: Forensic medicine is an important step toward progress in the medical and legal framework by evaluating the effects of trauma involved. Recent studies reveal the prevalence of sexual trauma and show that sexual assault is a critical problem for society and for its victims. Comprehensive evaluation should be conducted, and mental findings should be taken into account.
