Abstract

The study was descriptively conducted to determine the levels of social support and caregiver burden in rheumatic diseases. 271 patients and caregivers were involved in the study. Datas were collected with “Patient Information Form”, “Caregiver Information Form” prepared by the researchers and “Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ)”, “Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale” and “Caregiver Burden Scale”. In the evaluation of the datas, Mann Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis and Spearman correlation analyzes were performed. It was deter-mined that 82.3% of the caregivers were female and the closeness of the patient majority were wife/child. There was no significant difference caregiver burden for rheumatic diseases (p>0.05). Patient’s active disease, joint deformity, systemic involvement, increased symptom severi-ty, and caregivers’ poor economic status, living together with patients, low levels of social support and the excess time caregiving as factors that increase the burden of care. In chronic diseases accompanied by physical restraint, it should not be forgotten that the caregiver will be adversely affected as well as the patient.
