Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between individuals’ time management skills and their regular and irregular participation in physical activities and to determine whether there are significant differences between regular and irregular participation in terms of the sub-dimensions of time planning, time attitude, and time wasters. In addition, possible significant differences between individuals’ demographic characteristics (gender, age, and type of physical activity participated in) and the sub-dimensions of time management were also evaluated. The study sample consisted of 502 voluntary university students and staff members who were contacted via e-mail and who participated in activities such as yoga, pilates, sport for health, aikido, and capoeira offered by the university sports directorate. A Demographic Information Form and the Time Management Scale developed by Alay and Koçak (2002) were used in the study. Among the reasons for irregular participation in physical activities, temporal factors (68.6%) ranked first, followed by personal reasons (13.7%), activity-related reasons (9.8%), and other reasons (7.8%). Significant differences in time management skills were observed in terms of gender, age, and preferred type of activity. No significant difference was found between regular and irregular participants in terms of time planning skills and time wasters. However, in the time attitude sub-dimension, individuals who regularly participated in physical activities were found to have more positive attitudes toward time. The findings reveal a statistically significant relationship between the time attitude dimension of time management skills and regular participation in physical activities. Accordingly, it is suggested that practices aimed at strengthening individuals’ awareness of time management may increase participation in physical activities.
