Thematic comparison aims to examine the common and divergent thematic elements of literary works produced in different periods and geographies within the social, cultural, and historical contexts in which they were written, while also considering the authors’ stylistic approaches. This study aims to conduct a thematic comparison between The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant, one of the prominent figures of French literature, and Yaprak Dökümü (Falling Leaves) by Reşat Nuri Güntekin, a leading author of Turkish literature. Despite belonging to different literary traditions, both works are shaped around common themes such as social status and ambition, the dissolution of moral values, and intrafamilial relationships. The main objective of the study is to reveal how these themes are addressed in both works, analyze the characters’ attitudes toward these themes, and examine the relationship between these attitudes and the social structure of the period. In this context, the individual’s position within society, the transformative effects of economic concerns on human relationships, and the process of disintegration experienced by the family institution are discussed comparatively. Designed as a qualitative comparative study, this research employs the document analysis method; the data collection process is based on the textual analysis of the primary sources, The Necklace and Yaprak Dökümü, while secondary sources include relevant books, academic articles, journals, and reliable digital resources. The findings demonstrate that the pursuit of social status results in both individual and moral decline in the two works. Nevertheless, whereas The Necklace foregrounds individual ambition and material values, Yaprak Dökümü more prominently portrays the disintegration of family structure and the impact of social transformation on individuals. Consequently, this study comparatively demonstrates how the themes of social status and ambition, the erosion of moral values, and intrafamilial relationships are represented in The Necklace and Yaprak Dökümü. In this respect, the study contributes to the identification and understanding of thematic similarities and differences between French and Turkish literature.

Tematik karşılaştırma, farklı dönemlerde ve coğrafyalarda kaleme alınmış edebî eserlerin ortak ve ayrışan tematik unsurlarını, yazarların üslupları ve eserlerin ortaya çıktığı toplumsal, kültürel ve tarihsel bağlamlar doğrultusunda incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu çalışma, Fransız edebiyatının önemli temsilcilerinden Guy de Maupassant’ın Gerdanlık (The Necklace) adlı eseri ile Türk edebiyatının önde gelen yazarlarından Reşat Nuri Güntekin’in Yaprak Dökümü adlı romanını tematik açıdan karşılaştırmayı hedeflemektedir. Farklı edebî geleneklere ait olmalarına rağmen her iki eserin de toplumsal statü ve hırs, ahlaki değerlerin çözülmesi ve aile içi ilişkiler gibi ortak temalar etrafında şekillendiği görülmektedir. Çalışmanın temel amacı, söz konusu temaların her iki eserde nasıl ele alındığını, karakterlerin bu temalar karşısındaki tutumlarını ve bu tutumların toplumsal yapı ile ilişkisini ortaya koymaktır. Bulgular, her iki eserde de toplumsal statü arayışının bireysel ve ahlaki yıkımlara yol açtığını göstermektedir. Bununla birlikte Gerdanlık’ta bireysel hırs ve maddi değerler ön plana çıkarken, Yaprak Dökümü’nde aile yapısının çözülmesi ve toplumsal değişimin birey üzerindeki etkileri daha belirgin biçimde işlenmiştir. Sonuç olarak çalışma, Gerdanlık ve Yaprak Dökümü eserlerinde toplumsal statü ve hırs, ahlaki değerlerin çözülmesi ve aile ilişkilerinin nasıl temsil edildiğini karşılaştırmalı olarak ortaya koymaktadır. Bu yönüyle çalışma, Fransız ve Türk edebiyatlarındaki tematik benzerlik ve farklılıkların belirlenmesine katkı sağlamaktadır.
