Abstract

Although many studies examine social media usage, research on individuals who intentionally avoid such platforms remains limited. This study explores the reasons behind non-use among 12 voluntary participants, focusing on platforms other than WhatsApp and YouTube. Key motivations for avoiding social media include concerns over time-wasting, psychological fatigue, privacy, artificial interactions, and constant comparison pressure. Participants reported that social media reduced their productivity, distracted their focus, and negatively impacted their mental well-being. After leaving social media, many turned to more fulfilling activities such as reading, walking, and engaging in face-to-face communication. Despite acknowledging drawbacks—such as missing current events and feeling socially excluded—participants largely found life without social media to be more mentally and socially rewarding. Additionally, the belief that social media platforms manipulate users through algorithms and curated content was a recurring theme. Highly filtered, overly positive content often led to feelings of inadequacy, social comparison, and fear of missing out (FOMO). For many, avoiding social media served as a deliberate strategy for protecting mental health and maintaining a more authentic sense of self. Ultimately, the decision to abstain from social media was closely linked to values such as privacy, efficient use of time, and the pursuit of genuine relationships.
