Abstract

In recent years, the rapid rise of large language models, such as ChatGPT, has brought about profound changes in information access and content generation, while simultaneously rendering the concept of “trust” in these systems increasingly complex and contested. The growing presence of AI systems in everyday life—through a wide range of applications, services, and products—has further highlighted the significance of user trust and distrust toward artificial intelligence. This study aims to investigate the nature, boundaries, and construction of trust that users establish with AI, focusing on ChatGPT. To this end, user comments posted under relevant threads on the Reddit platform, which capture natural user experiences and discussions, were analysed using thematic analysis, a qualitative research method. The findings revealed eight themes pertaining to users’ perceptions of trust in AI and ChatGPT. The results indicate that trust in AI is conditional, context-dependent, and process-oriented. Users don’t perceive AI as an infallible source of knowledge; rather, they position it as an “assistive tool” that requires supervision, verification, and guidance. The analysis demonstrates that trust is not contingent upon the system’s perfection, but on the user’s capacity to monitor and validate its outputs. Notably, distrust predominates in high-risk domains, such as psychological support, whereas in contexts that demand efficiency and speed, users continue to utilize the system despite potential errors. Overall, the study highlights that users do not delegate full responsibility to AI; instead, they integrate these technologies into their lives with pragmatic scepticism, adhering to a “trust, but verify” principle.
