Abstract

The aim of this research is to clarify the relationship between social media platforms and crime, and to develop a prediction model regarding court decisions related to these crimes. Today, social media platforms have become primary spaces for individual self-expression; however, this situation has led to the migration of various crime types—such as insult, fraud, obscenity, sexual harassment, and the promotion of drug use—to these digital environments. Furthermore, these platforms have become widely utilized by criminals and criminal organizations. Such channels are also employed as tools in the commission of organized crimes or "catalog crimes," including sexual assault, organ trafficking, and homicide. This study also compares results with a similar study conducted by the same author in 2021, analyzing the trends and shifts in crime types. It has been observed that crimes committed on social media have significantly increased and cover a broad spectrum. The growing judicial burden caused by social media-related crimes brings to the fore the need to utilize technological solutions in the analysis of these cases. Accordingly, this study aims to analyze court decisions regarding social media crimes and develop an artificial intelligence model capable of predicting the outcomes (affirmance or reversal) of these decisions. Within the scope of the research, a unique dataset was curated from judicial records. The developed model attempted to predict court outcomes by analyzing legal texts.
