Abstract

Artificial intelligence has emerged as one of the contemporary phenomena transforming the field of education. Building conceptual awareness of these technologies within teacher education programs has gained considerable importance. In this regard, the present study aims to reveal the cognitive structures of pre-service special education teachers concerning the concept of artificial intelligence. The study was designed within a qualitative survey model, and a word association test was employed as the data collection instrument. The study group was determined through criterion sampling. The participants consisted of a total of 165 pre-service teachers enrolled across four grade levels in the special education department of a state university. Artificial intelligence was designated as the key concept. Participants were asked to write down the first ten words that came to mind in relation to this concept within one minute. In the analysis of the data, categories were generated based on semantic proximity. The study yielded 1,338 word repetitions and 304 distinct concepts. These concepts were grouped under 12 categories and five themes, namely Ontological Framework, Functional Framework, Instrumental Value, Innovation and Future Vision, and Critical and Relational Perspective. The findings indicated that the cognitive structures of the pre-service teachers were predominantly concentrated within the functional and ontological frameworks, whereas the critical dimension remained limited.
