Abstract

Based on the theory of time of the French aesthetic theorist Edmond Couchot, this study investigates the relationship between digital images produced via virtual reality and their reception moment. By reading the image-time relationship through three ages (Renaissance, mechanical reproduction and digital) and three different media (painting, television/video and digital medium), we aim to study how our perception of time has evolved with digitalization and virtual reality. To realize this, after explaining the three visual subcultures defined by Martin Jay as the scopic regimes of Modernity, the relationship between digital image and its reception moment will be interpreted following Couchot’s aesthetic theory for digital arts. In the last part, through the pioneer digital installation Osmose (an artwork of simulation, interaction and immersion) of Canadian artist Charlie Davies, we will discuss how our conception of motion, space and time has changed. In this context, the definition of the word virtual is determined as an extension of reality and within the scope of the Aristotelian concept of the virtual: it is some kind of power or potential that digital devices have, which becomes actual through an image, sound or text. The aim of this study is to discuss to what extent the visual possibilities offered by digital arts, which can be defined as the art movement of the 21st century, and especially by virtual reality technology, can lead us towards a different scopic regime. It is assumed that there is a new type of relationship between image and its perception moment which needs to be conceptualized with a new aesthetic theory. So, I argue that one can talk about a new scopic regime based on a new perception of time. To this aim, it is explained that Gilles Deleuze’s concept of flux-image/time, as within the flux the past and the future could exist as a continuous present, can constitute a starting point for the conceptualization of a new scopic regime.
