Abstract

Paracinema is a mode of viewing and reading that defines itself in opposition to mainstream approaches and products. This mode operates according to a specific judgement of taste, celebrating certain works while excluding others. This study takes Çetin İnanç’s The Man Who Saved the World ( Dünyayı Kurtaran Adam , 1982) as a case study to explore the mechanisms of cultural consecration within paracinema. The Man Who Saved the World is considered a cult movie that defies the dominant forms and styles of mainstream cinema. Belonging to the B-movie tradition of Yeşilçam, it also reflects the industrial realities of Third World cinemas in the 1960s–1980s. Within these contexts, the question of how and why The Man Who Saved the World is culturally consecrated by audiences and critics has two answers: First, it is valued as an example of the limited production conditions of its era; second, it is celebrated for the way it incorporates and recontextualizes visual and audio elements from mainstream movies.
