Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of the flipped classroom model on the teaching of art criticism. The research evaluated changes in students’ knowledge and awareness of art criticism, as well as their critical thinking, analysis, interpretation, and artistic expression skills. The research was conducted using a single-group pre-test–post-test design in line with a mixed-methods approach. The study group consisted of 12th-grade students attending a Fine Arts High School in Rize in 2026. The implementation process was carried out over two weeks in accordance with the flipped classroom model. Quantitative data were collected using a 5-point Likert-type scale, while qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interview questions. In the analysis of the data, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, frequency, and percentage values were calculated; additionally, the t-test for dependent samples and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test were used. Qualitative data were evaluated using descriptive analysis methods. The research findings indicate that the flipped classroom model increases students’ knowledge levels regarding art criticism and enhances their critical thinking, analysis, and interpretation skills. In conclusion, it was determined that the flipped classroom model is an effective pedagogical approach within the context of art education that supports students’ active participation, fosters a critical perspective, and deepens learning processes.
