Abstract

While research on professional identity typically focuses on the identities individuals maintain and construct, it has generally defined professional identity in cognitive terms. Emotional structures have often been overlooked in this process. However, very few studies have examined the professional identity individuals are forced to relinquish for various reasons. In this context, the study will contribute to the literature by thoroughly examining the theoretical framework of the abandoned professional identity. Furthermore, this study is the first of its kind in the Turkish literature. In this context, a model has been developed based on the basic grief process model to help individuals who are forced to abandon their professional identities for various reasons manage this process. In particular, individuals may be forced to relinquish their professional identities as a result of factors such as migration, disability, parenthood, the devaluation of acquired professional competence, and many others. In the process of constructing a new professional identity, the longing for the abandoned professional identity must be managed in a healthy manner. At this point, proper career counseling is of great importance. For this reason, an action plan guided by the grief model has been developed for individuals undergoing this process.
