Abstract

Using treated wastewater, an alternative-marginal water source, for irrigation can reduce pressure on freshwater resources. Furthermore, depending on the wastewater's composition, it can increase soil and plant productivity and reduce fertilizer requirements. This not only provides a more economical and effective production strategy but also addresses wastewater discharge problems. However, the quality and properties of the treated wastewater to be used in irrigation must be known and managed. Considering that the studies examining the water quality of the treatment plant effluent for irrigation purposes are limited in the literature, this study evaluated the usability of the treated wastewater of the advanced biological treatment plant in Van province for irrigation more realistically, based on daily data for the period between May and September, when active plant production is carried out in the province and irrigation is needed, under the national legislation in Türkiye and other national-international criteria, and included precautions for possible problems. As a result of the research, it was determined that the treated wastewater is a reliable water source for irrigation, considering that its pH, electrical conductivity, total nitrogen-phosphorus, biological-chemical oxygen demands and suspended matter do not exceed national and international legislation, and it was concluded that there is no harm for soil-plants-irrigation systems. Thus, the use of treated wastewater from the Van-Central Advanced Biological Treatment Plant in irrigation has become advisable, and the contribution to environmental sustainability by reducing the discharge into Lake Van has also been found to be significant.
