Abstract
Karāmah refers to extraordinary occurrences manifested, without any element of challenge, at the hands of a believing individual who lays no claim to prophethood and is characterized by righteous deeds. “The Companions, on the other hand, are those individuals who saw the Prophet, believed in him, and died upon that faith. In this study, the validity of the Mu‘tazilite scholar Qādi ‘Abd al-Jabbār's claim that “no karāmah were witnessed in the generation of the Companions” is examined. Because no scientific/academic study has been dovoted to this subject; it is hoped that this study will fill this gap in the literature. Within this framework, gap in the literature answers questions such as: 'While numerous karāmahs are attributed to the righteous servants who lived after the generation of the Companions, are there no karāmahs attributed to the Companions themselves? Did these extraordinary events not occur during the time of the Companions? To this end, the narratives attributing karāmahs to the Companions are examined, and the views of Müslim scholars in general, and hadith scholars in particular, regarding the authenticity of these narratives and how they should be understood, are determined. This study employs a methodology of collection and analysis of data, focusing primarily on hadith literature while also surveying other Islamic sources. According to the findings obtained, it is observed that the extraordinary events attributed to the Noble Companions and transmitted to us through authentic narratives are considerable in number, and that Müslim scholars have evaluated these events as karāmahs.
