Abstract

When the history of the Science of Qurʾanic Readings (ʿIlm al-Qirāʾāt), together with its sub-disciplines, is examined, it becomes evident that the Andalusian scholarly milieu made signi-ficant contributions to the development of this field. Indeed, when one surveys the major works that stand out in matters related to Qirāʾāt, Andalusian scholars consistently occupy a prominent place. This prominence is most clearly visible in the field of mushaf orthography (imlāʾ al-muṣḥaf), for it is a historical reality that the foundational texts of this discipline bear the signatures of Andalusian authorities. The earliest examples of these works date back to the second Islamic century, and they display a cumulative scholarly progression, with each subsequent text further refining and expanding the knowledge presented in earlier ones. Cen-tered on identifying and preserving the features of the rasm ʿUthmānī—the orthographic style of the earliest Qurʾān codices prepared during the caliphate of ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān—these treatises became especially significant during the era of printed muṣḥafs, when adhe-rence to the rasm ʿUthmānī gained heightened importance. The hybrid orthographic practices that emerged in the fourth Islamic century and came to dominate the manuscript tradition for centuries were later viewed as deviations during the age of print. Consequently, the call for returning to a strict rasm ʿUthmānī intensified. These developments brought the works of two Andalusian scholars—al-Dānī (d. 444/1053) and Abū Dāwūd b. Najāḥ (d. 496/1103)—to the forefront, and printed Qurʾāns generally relied on their texts as authoritative references.Such circumstances underscore the need for studies that analyze the primary works shaping the Andalusian legacy of mushaf orthography and explore the relationships between them. The present article arises from precisely this scholarly need: it classifies these foundational texts and attempts to clarify the specific contributions each one made to the Andalusian tradition.

Hz.
