Abstract

The aim of this article is to examine Jean-Luc Nancy’s political ontology through the concept of being-with (être-avec) and to discuss the ontological relation among politics, the political, freedom, and democracy. According to Nancy, politics (la politique) represents the ontic sphere of institutions and power relations, whereas the political (le politique) constitutes the mode of being-together and, in this sense, belongs to ontology as “first philosophy.” Being-with functions both as the condition and the expression of this co-existence, revealing freedom not as a subjective will but as the mode of opening that emerges from being’s own withdrawal. This mode of opening, which lies at the core of Nancy’s philosophy of sense (sens), also determines the ontological dimension of democracy. For Nancy, democracy is not merely a political form but a regime of meaning grounded in the plurality that takes place within being-in-common (être-en-commun). Thus, freedom, democracy, and the political intersect in the concept of being-with, becoming ontologically interrelated, while politics itself is grounded in the shared openness of being. Consequently, in Nancy’s philosophy, political ontology is constituted as an ontological understanding of openness rethought through the concept of the political.
