Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the mental health literacy level of nurses and midwives working in family health centers. Method: The cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted in 48 Family Health Centers in a province located in northwestern Turkey. The sample of the study consisted of 200 nurses and midwives. Data were collected using the “Personal Information Form” and “Mental Health Literacy Scale”. Results: It has been determined that 95.5% of health professionals are women, and 57.5% have worked in family health centers for 1-5 years. The total mean score for nurses on the “Mental Health Literacy Scale” was 96.97±10.76, while that for midwives was 95.98±10.47. The average scores of nurses were found to be higher than those of midwives in the subdimensions of “self-help” and “knowledge to access professional help” (p<0.05). Conclusion: In the study, it was determined that the mental health literacy levels of nurses and midwives working in family health centers were at a moderate level. In this regard, it is recommended that training activities be conducted to increase the mental health literacy level of health professionals working in family health centers.
