Abstract

The dynamics of financial markets are not confined solely to economic fundamentals but are also closely linked to investors’ perceptions of risk and return, which are shaped by global and domestic developments. This study investigates the duration and persistence of the causal effects of CDS spreads, the VIX global volatility index, the Crypto Fear and Greed Index, economic policy uncertainty, and exchange rate return volatility on the BIST 100 index. In this context, the Toda-Yamamoto causality test is first employed, followed by the Breitung-Candelon conditional frequency-domain causality test. The findings indicate that changes in CDS spreads, the VIX volatility index, and the economic policy uncertainty index exert long-term and persistent effects on the BIST 100 index. In contrast, the effects of changes in the Crypto Fear and Greed Index—which reflects the fear and optimism perceptions of cryptocurrency market investors—and exchange rate return volatility are short-lived and temporary. Overall, the results reveal that the dynamics of the Turkish stock market and investors’ decisions are strongly influenced by both domestic and global indicators of risk and uncertainty.
