Abstract
In his book “Why Don’t We Have Classics?, D. Mehmet Doğan states that Turkish classics have been passed down from generation to generation for centuries in the collective memory of the society. The author touches upon how the changes and transformations that took place, especially after Tanzimat and the Republic affected the basic works, and argues that the alphabet reform and the simplification movements in the language did not accept the Turkish classics and basic texts as a common consensus. With the translation movement initiated by the MEB in the 1940s by Hasan Âli Yücel, Western and then Eastern-Islamic classics were brought into Turkish. In the 1970s, MEB’s attempt to publish 1000 basic works was interrupted before reaching 100 works. MEB’s 100 Basic Works movement in the 2000s posed problems due to the destruction of some of the selected works by publishing houses. In his study, Doğan evaluates the reasons for the failure to determine Turkish classics with a common consensus on all the details of the historical process. This article will examine D. Mehmet Doğan’s approach to the issue of classics in terms of its social and cultural dimensions. His criticisms and suggestions on this subject will be interpreted.
