Abstract

This study aims to examine depersonalisation and social decay by analysing the impact of an individual’s social environment on their life and behavioural norms in Ahmed Taibaoui’s (Tîbâvî-طيباوي) novel The Disappearance of Mr Nobody. To this end, the study evaluates the novel through textual analysis. The study is grounded in a theoretical framework based on Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of habitus, developed with a deep understanding of Algeria, and focused on the formation of social systems and patterns of human behaviour. In his novel, Taibaoui portrays the individual’s detachment from the world around him, his alienation from the habitus he inhabits, and his struggle to cling to life within an order he does not embrace. In conclusion, the author, through a narrative that meticulously details both the internal fluctuations within the individual’s psyche and societal reflexes, demonstrates mastery of the dynamics of post-Civil War Algeria. The narrative centres on the individual who lost their identity early in life as a social projection, prompting the reader to reflect on the spirit and intellectual world of Algerians from social, psychological, philosophical, and religious perspectives.
