Abstract

The aim of this study is to test a school-to-work transition model developed based on the Psychology of Working Theory among university students. The study examined the extent to which economic constraints, experiences of marginalization, and academic self-efficacy explain future decent work through both direct and indirect pathways. A total of 428 university students (228 female, 200 male) participated in the study. Data were collected using the Economic Constraints Scale, the Lifelong Experiences of Marginalization Scale, the Academic Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Future Decent Work Scale. Model analysis results indicate that, regarding the structure of future decent work, only the direct negative effect of economic constraints is significant, while the effects of experiences of marginalization are significant both directly and indirectly through academic self-efficacy. The findings suggest that economic and social disadvantages may play a negative role in the transition to work, but that academic self-efficacy acts as a mediator capable of mitigating the negative effects of experiences of marginalization on perceptions of future decent work. The findings were evaluated within the framework of the school-to-work transition model developed under the Psychology of Working Theory and recommendations were presented.
