Abstract

Creation and destruction are sequential processes that give rise to new formations. Art movements emerge by rejecting the tendencies of the previous period, and especially in modern art, there is a destructive attitude toward tradition with the desire to reach the new. This study focuses on artistic orientations that manifest through the attitude mentioned above, and aims to examine the painting practice of Nicola Samori, which is characterized by a method that involves destructive processes. The artist manipulates the baroque figure understanding, which he carries to the present day with admiration and obsession, by making it a part of his painting in various ways. He creates visual, conceptual, and material contrasts by destroying the oil paintings that he masterfully paints with an extremely reverse movement. Through meticulous work, he disrupts the illusionistic image and its meaning with the material's materiality sharply and intensely. Thus, it offers a layered sign in terms of material and meaning as well as form and content. Beyond individual works, Samori consistently directs the cycle towards structuring within his comprehensive production process, thus making the cycle functional.
