Abstract

Smart cities focus on improving society’s quality of life in parallel with rapid technological development. As in many sectors, the tourism industry has also been impacted, leading to the emergence of the concept of smart tourism. Ecotourism activities based on sustainability require a proper decision-making system to provide benefits and ensure continuity with principles that protect natural and cultural resource values. Smart cities can provide opportunities in terms of accessing data and making accurate assessments. In this context, the research aimed to determine the most suitable ecotourism destinations in Giresun province by utilizing smart city capabilities. Numerical and verbal data obtained from different public institutions was employed along with the Geographic Information System (GIS)-based Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique to identify potential ecotourism areas within Giresun province. The study evaluated four basic factors: slope, aspect, proximity to water resources, and proximity to roads. As a result, slope (0,215) and proximity to roads (0,643) were identified as weighted influential factors in planning ecotourism areas. The analysis also showed that 24.93% of the area in Giresun province was very suitable for ecotourism, 6.72% was less suitable, and 68.35% was unsuitable. These results were consistent with previously considered ecotourism areas. The study is expected to increase efficiency in ecotourism planning using smart city data, facilitate the identification of important destinations, and contribute to resource conservation.
