Abstract

This study analyzes the key issues that emerge in the context of anesthesia and intensive care by examining complaints included in the database of the Ombudsman Institution of Türkiye. Out of a total of 12.612 decisions, twenty were found to be directly associated with anesthesia and intensive care processes and were assessed using document analysis and content analysis approaches. The findings indicate that most complaints center on malpractice claims, a shortage or delay in intensive care beds, communication and information gaps, and the independence of administrative investigations. Furthermore, the necessity for patients’ relatives to conclude the process without receiving an official response or apology exacerbates communication problems and reduces patient satisfaction. A significant portion of the decisions also highlights the lack of effectiveness in internal auditing mechanisms and insufficient use of objective methods such as expert and inspector investigations. In conclusion, in order to protect patient rights and enhance service quality, it is crucial that anesthesia and intensive care complaints be addressed through an impartial, transparent, and comprehensive investigation process, as well as through inter-institutional collaboration and effective communication models.
