Abstract

Complex textural characteristics and pore orientation significantly influence the physical and mechanical properties of travertines. Although anisotropic behavior in travertines commonly appears to resemble bedding observed in sedimentary rocks, the influence of oriented pores in travertines lacking distinct bedding has received limited attention. In this study, the anisotropic characteristics of travertine were investigated through Leeb hardness (HL), Schmidt hardness (HS), P-wave velocity (VP), S-wave velocity (VS), uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), dynamic elastic modulus (Ed), and point load strength index (PLI) tests performed on specimens prepared both parallel and perpendicular to the predominant pore orientation. The results revealed that the degree of anisotropy varied considerably depending on the physico-mechanical parameter considered. The greatest directional variations were observed in strength parameters, whereas lower degrees of variation were obtained for hardness and elastic wave velocities. This indicates that the control exerted by the pore-textural system, characterized by preferentially oriented pores, on failure mechanisms is substantially greater than its influence on elastic wave propagation and surface hardness. The results demonstrated pronounced directional dependence, with anisotropy indices ranging from 1.05 for VP to 2.20 for UCS, indicating that strength was considerably more sensitive to pore-fabric orientation. Consequently, the distinctive fabric and pore orientation of travertine should be considered fundamental factors governing its engineering performance.
