Abstract

Objective: The objective of this study is to assess the current status of medical history education in medical faculties across Türkiye. Method: The study was designed as a descriptive research to assess the scope and implementation of medical history courses within the curricula of medical faculties. Medical schools were accessed through the Higher Education Undergraduate Atlas System. The study was conducted between April 1 and 30, 2024. During this period, the curricula of 110 medical faculties registered in the system were included in the study. The data collection form, designed by the researchers, was filled out by examining the education plans available on the faculties' websites. Results: The findings reveal that medical faculties in Türkiye include medical history courses at varying levels in their pre-graduation programs. While the vast majority of the 110 medical faculties examined incorporate medical history into their curricula, significant differences were observed in the content and scope of these courses. Of these courses, 91.2% are offered under the title "History of Medicine and Ethics," while others are presented under different titles. In 50% of the schools, the courses are taught by subject matter experts, whereas in 36.4% of the schools, they are delivered by faculty from other fields. The curriculum content ranges from prehistoric medicine to modern medicine, with notable disparities in course hours and content across faculties. Conclusion: It is recommended that a working group be established and comprehensive planning be conducted to standardize the content, duration, and teaching methods of medical history courses, as well as to evaluate various factors such as the profile of teaching staff and the inclusion of practical sessions. Additionally, incorporating medical history courses into the national core curriculum and including them in the Medical Specialization Examination (TUS) are suggested as critical steps to enhance the importance and effectiveness of medical history education.
