Abstract

Objective: The aim of the present study was to compare methods for assessing oral dryness and to examine their relationship with oral health-related quality of life. Materials and methods: In the present study, 116 participants, who were divided into two groups based on their unstimulated salivary flow rate (hyposalivation and normosalivation) and four subgroups (Group 1-4) according to the presence of xerostomia complaint, were included. All participants were administered several questionnaires (Xerostomia Inventory (XI), summed XI, Fox et al., Pai et al.) for xerostomia evaluation, as well as VAS assessments. Clinical oral dryness score (CODS) was utilized for the assessment of extent and severity of oral dryness. The Oral Assessment Guide (OAG) and OHIP-14 scale were performed to assess oral health and related quality of life. Results: The scores of OAG, CODS, Fox et al. and Pai et al. questionnaires were significantly higher in the hyposalivation group than in the normosalivators. CODS, VAS dryness, VAS total and all questionnaires applied for xerostomia diagnosis clearly distinguished individuals in groups 1 and 3 with xerostomia from the controls (group 4), regardless of salivary flow rate. Moreover, the XI questionnaire results of the hyposalivation group were significantly higher in those with xerostomia than those without xerostomia. Conclusion: Considering that subjective and semiquantitative assessment methods of dry mouth provide results compatible with objective measurement, it can be said that questionnaires can be given priority in routine clinical practice or that the use of objective and subjective assessment methods together can be beneficial.
