Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels and the early clinical failure of orthodontic mini-screws, a relationship that has been insufficiently investigated in the existing literature. Materials and Methods: This single-center observational pilot study included 28 patients divided into two groups: failed mini-screws (n = 14) and successful mini-screws (n = 14). Serum 25(OH)D levels were measured using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). Statistical analyses were performed using the chi-square test and independent samples t-test (p 0.05). Similarly, no significant associations were observed between mini-screw success and age, sex, or seasonal variation, although higher success rates were noted during spring and summer. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this pilot study, serum vitamin D levels do not appear to be an independent determinant of early orthodontic mini-screw failure. However, given the role of vitamin D in bone metabolism and inflammatory processes, its potential indirect effects on peri-implant tissue response and long-term stability should not be disregarded. These findings provide preliminary clinical evidence and highlight the need for further well-designed studies to clarify the relationship.
