Abstract

Objective: Purpose of our research is to assess the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of arbutin in an experimental acute pancreatitis model Materials and Methods: Thirty-two female Wistar albino rats were utilized in this experiment and distributed equally among four groups: control, pancreatitis, low-dose arbutin treatment, and high-dose arbutin treatment. In pancreatic tissue, the levels of myeloperoxidase (MPO), trypsinogen activation peptide (TAP), catalase (CAT), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were measured. Additionally, serum levels of alpha-amylase and lipase were evaluated. Histopathological examination included assessment of vacuolization, inflammation, necrosis, and edema. Results: Compared to the pancreatitis group, both low- and high-dose arbutin treatment groups showed statistically significant decreases in alpha-amylase, MDA, and TAP levels, and GPx levels was significantly higher. Decrease in IL-6, MPO and IL-1 and increase in SOD levels were significant only in high dose arbutin group. . Histological examination showed a reduction in edema, inflammation, necrosis, and vacuolization however it was not statistically significant. Conclusion: Our study reveals that arbutin exhibits both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in acute pancreatitis These results shows arbutin might potentially have a role in the prevention and treatment of both local and systemic complications of acute pancreatitis.
