Abstract
Idioms, which hold an important place in the lexicon of the Turkish language, are among the elements that diversify meaning and enhance the aesthetic power of language in classical Turkish poetry. Some idioms have fallen out of use over time, while others have undergone changes in meaning or form. In this context, identifying idioms encountered in texts and deciphering their meanings is important for accurately reading both the historical lexicon and the layers of meaning in poetry. ‘El yu-’ is a lexical element that is no longer in use today but has also functioned as a refrain in classical Turkish poetry. ‘El yu-’ appears in poems with the meaning of washing, purifying, as well as idiomatically. Today, yu-’ is used in speech to mean cleaning. This study aims to examine the ghazals of Necati and Mihri with the refrain ‘el yudum’ in a comparative manner. In this text-centred study, the interaction and stylistic differences between the two poets are explored through the ‘el yudum’ refrain. When comparing the ghazals with the same refrain by Necati and Mihri, who can be considered his follower, it was found that the ghazals were shaped around common motifs, and the aspects that distinguished the ghazals in terms of meaning were also emphasised. Although there is no clear difference in expression, differences in the use of certain motifs are noticeable. The results of the analysis highlight the emphasis placed by both poets on abandoning certain elements considered valuable. The study reveals the richness of meaning in the ghazals of both poets through a comparative analysis of the aforementioned refrain, thereby contributing to both the continuity of traditional expression and the poetic function of expression.
