Abstract

This study investigates the impact of the Ovacık Fault Zone, forming the northeastern segment of the Malatya–Ovacık Fault Zone, on the surrounding fluvial basins. Extending approximately 140 km from Erzincan to Arapgir, the Ovacık Fault lies between the Mercan Mountains and the Ovacık Plain, producing a distinct topographic lineation between the mountain front and the adjacent lowland. This linearity is marked by a mountain front with low sinuosity, indicative of tectonic control. Geomorphic features such as stream offsets, systematically aligned alluvial fans and cones, displaced depositional forms, fault scarps, and bowl-shaped drainage structures behind these scarps collectively suggest active tectonic processes shaping the landscape. Furthermore, the presence of secondary faults parallel to the Ovacık Fault has intensified fault-related lineaments in the region. Despite findings from previous studies indicating low-rate tectonic activity, the Relative Tectonic Activity Index (IRAT) developed by El Hamdouni et al. (2008) was employed in this study. According to the classification of this method, index values ranging between 1.3 and 1.6, indicating high to very high tectonic activity, were obtained for the studied basins. This index is calculated through the equal-weighted combined evaluation of analyses sensitive to tectonic influences, including the Hypsometric Integral (HI), Stream Length–Gradient Index (SL), Valley Floor Width–to–Valley Height Ratio (Vf), Mountain Front Sinuosity (Smf), Basin Asymmetry (AF), and Basin Shape Index (Bs). The study findings indicate the continuity of the activity of the Ovacık Fault Zone on geomorphological and hydrographic elements in the study area and its pronounced influence on surface deformation. In this context, the study is considered to contribute to understanding the effects of local tectonic evolution on surface deformation.
