Abstract

Like phenomena that have existed for a long time and evoke anxiety about disappearance, religion is also being questioned in terms of its future. Concepts such as “the end of religion, digital religion, techno-theology, transhumanism” point to the possibility that traditional religion may be replaced by new forms of belief or transformed religious processes. This article addresses the future of religion not in terms of statistical data on religious practices at different times, but within the context of social change processes. While the extent to which religion is considered in a society and the decline in religious practices may facilitate assessments of its future, interpretations along the axis of secularization generally suggest that traditional religion is giving way to new forms of belief. Examining the issue on a micro level creates an impression, globally, as if secularism has triumphed and religion has been defeated. If there is indeed a disappearance, is it only in religion? Is it correct to say that religion has no future? Can the scarcity of religious practices be considered evidence of the absence of religion? In this context, the aim of the article is to demonstrate that the question of the future of religion is connected to long-lasting, globally widespread social changes. Moreover, it shows that not only religion but all elements of the human–nature relationship are subject to social change; therefore, religion should not be assessed solely on the basis of its temporal practices. The study is significant in that it addresses the future of religion from the perspective of social change, in past, present, and future contexts. Evaluating the problem by starting from the person, event, or process that produced it leads to referencing the same chain of causes, which results in a misleading approach due to examining the problem from within those causes. The future of religion is considered from within a transformed, evolved, and newly produced world. In this sense, the article is also important for emphasizing awareness of change. Since this topic encompasses not only religion but also history, sociology, and other disciplines, the study is designed as an interdisciplinary qualitative research approach, as a holistic and critical document analysis of selected literature on a hermeneutic and theoretical basis.
