Abstract
Ottoman chronicles were generally written by historians living in the imperial center and its immediate surroundings and, as a rule, reflected the perspective of the central authority. Nevertheless, some works produced in the provinces -particularly in Egypt, which possessed a deeply rooted scholarly and historiographical tradition- offer alternative viewpoints on Ottoman military campaigns. Egyptian historians not only recorded events but also illuminated the local repercussions of these campaigns. This study aims to examine the approaches and narratives of provincial historians regarding Sultan Murad IV’s Baghdad campaign through Ottoman sources written in seventeenth-century Egypt. In this context, the principal sources are Fetihnâme-i Bağdâd by Kâdîzâde Ahmed Çelebi and Târîhü’l-ihtimâm bi-fethi Dâri’s-selâm by Müteferrika Ahmed. Both authors personally participated in the Baghdad campaign and, as direct witnesses to the process and provided detailed accounts in their works. In addition, the study draws on relevant texts by Egyptian historians such as Kâtib Ali, Mehmed bin Yusuf el-Hallâk, and Abdülkerim bin Abdurrahman in order to identify the contributions of provincial historiography to the narrative of the Baghdad campaign. Furthermore, the extent to which capital-centered chronicles refer to provincial troops -specifically Egyptian soldiers- within the context of the 1638 Baghdad campaign is also addressed. The aforementioned works are examined using the method of content analysis. By focusing on the position, organization, spheres of activity, and relations of Egyptian troops with the Ottoman central authority during the campaign, the study analyzes how a perspective oriented from the provinces toward the center was constructed. In this respect, it demonstrates that a more comprehensive understanding of Ottoman military campaigns can be achieved through the combined evaluation of chronicles written in both the center and the provinces.
Bu bağlamda çalışmanın temel kaynakları Kâdîzâde Ahmed Çelebi'nin Fetihnâme-i Bağdâd ve Müteferrika Ahmed'in Târîhü'l-ihtimâm Bi-fethi Dâri's-selâm adlı eserleridir.
