Abstract

This article examines the two glossary sections found exclusively in the Latin translation of Johannes Leunclavius’s 16 th -century work Historiae Musulmanae Turcorum , which are absent from both the original German text and the Turkish translation. Originally composed in German in 1590 and translated into Latin in 1591, the work specifically addresses Ottoman history. Besides, the two distinct glossary sections in question are particularly significant for Turkish language studies, as they document place names, historical figures, cultural concepts, and a wide range of Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Greek, and Italian terms from the Ottoman world, all rendered in the Latin alphabet. In doing so, the study provides valuable data on the pronunciation features, historical context and cultural aspects of Turkish during the period in question. Further, it outlines Leunclavius’s biography and scholarly contributions, with particular emphasis on his place in the field of Turkology. In this context, the study contends that the glossaries represent an important yet previously neglected source for research on the history of the Turkish language. By introducing these overlooked sections, the article addresses a notable gap in the existing literature.
