Abstract
In 1095, Pope Urban II’s call at the Council of Clermont reverberated across Western Europe, marking the beginning of the Crusades. While the council emphasized religious motivations particularly the liberation of Jerusalem and the Holy Lands from Muslim rule the appeal also offered social, economic, and political opportunities for feudal lords, knights, and broad segments of the population. The First Crusade (1096–1099) began with armies drawn from diverse social strata crossing into Byzantine territory and advancing through Anatolia, where they captured strategic centers such as Nicaea and Dorylaeum after arduous struggles. The support of Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos proved decisive in the early stages, though divergent interests between the Latins and Byzantines soon gave rise to tensions. The most critical phase unfolded during the protracted and exhausting siege of Antioch (1097–1098), a victory that boosted Crusader morale and consolidated their presence in the East. Ultimately, the capture of Jerusalem in 1099 brought the first stage of the Crusades to its climax and paved the way for the establishment of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and other Crusader states in the Eastern Mediterranean. This process represented not merely a religious movement but also a profound transformation of medieval European society, a reconfiguration of East–West relations, and the emergence of a new balance of power in the Mediterranean world. Accordingly, this study examines the causes, development, and consequences of this initial phase, from the Council of Clermont to the Crusaders’ conquest of Jerusalem.
